Adopting a dog or cat in Greater Lisbon
Greater Lisbon is the most densely populated region in Portugal, and its animal-welfare picture reflects that. The capital and its ring of municipalities — Sintra, Cascais, Oeiras, Amadora, Loures, Almada and Setúbal across the river — together hold millions of residents and, inevitably, thousands of dogs and cats needing homes each year. Unlike the rural south, Lisbon’s rescue scene is shaped by apartment living, public transport, busy roads and a fast pace of life, all of which influence which animals thrive here.
The good news is that Lisbon also has the country’s deepest pool of shelters, foster networks and veterinary services. The municipal Casa dos Animais de Lisboa, the historic União Zoófila and large associations such as UPPA and Canil da Aroeira mean that whatever you are looking for — a calm senior cat for a city flat, a medium dog for weekend hikes in Sintra, or a playful kitten — there is almost certainly a match within a short drive or metro ride.
