Adopting a dog or cat in Porto and the north
Porto and its surrounding councils form Portugal’s second-largest urban area, a dense northern belt running along the Douro from the historic city centre out to Vila Nova de Gaia, Matosinhos, Maia, Gondomar and Valongo, and up the coast to Póvoa de Varzim and Vila do Conde. Animal rescue in the north is anchored by strong municipal services, with the city’s official centre, CROA, at its heart — but a growing number of independent associations now work alongside it to rehome dogs and cats across the region.
The northern rescue scene has a practical, no-nonsense character. Many of the dogs available are medium-to-large mixed breeds and former guard or working dogs from the rural fringes of Greater Porto, alongside a steady flow of cats from urban colonies. If you want an honest, resilient companion and are willing to give a larger or overlooked dog a chance, Porto is one of the best regions in the country to adopt.
