Animal Rescue Algarve was founded in 2017 by a resident English businessman who not only funded the total capital cost of the project but has also financed its running costs since its inception. This foundational support allowed ARA to establish its significant operations. In January 2018, five hectares of land were acquired in the Cabanita area, northwest of Loulé. After months of extensive cleaning and infrastructure development, the shelter officially opened its doors in September of the same year, with the first adoption taking place in November. Since then, ARA has grown into a vital organization driven by a governing body of twelve dedicated volunteers, striving to improve animal welfare locally and eventually throughout Portugal.
