About the shelter

Terra Canis is a small non-profit dog sanctuary in the Alentejo and part of the wider work of the Tamera Peace Research Centre. Its dogs range from young, energetic companions to older dogs and dogs with additional needs.

Mission

Terra Canis rescues and rehabilitates dogs in southern Portugal and teaches children and local communities how to care for and connect with dogs.

History & background

In 2002, members of the Tamera community began feeding and giving water to permanently chained dogs nearby. Realising this alone did not solve the problem, they created a sanctuary where dogs could be rescued, rehabilitated and rehomed.

Geographic service area

The sanctuary is at Tamera, in the municipality of Odemira, and rescues dogs across southern Portugal.

Animals rescued

Dogs only, many of them former guard, hunting or farm dogs, of different ages and sizes.
