Adopting a dog or cat in the Azores
The Azores are nine islands scattered across the middle of the Atlantic, and animal rescue here is almost entirely the work of small volunteer groups and municipal collection centres. Dogs abandoned on farm tracks in São Miguel, around Ponta Delgada or in the rural parishes of Ribeira Grande have nowhere to move on to, so volunteers pick them up, treat them and keep them in foster homes and private kennels until an adopter appears — on the islands, on the mainland, or abroad.
Because the pool of local adopters is small, Azorean rescues place many of their dogs with families in continental Portugal and in northern Europe, and much of their fundraising and volunteering base is international. Listings are typically written in English as well as Portuguese, and dogs travel by plane from Ponta Delgada once an adoption is agreed. Adopting an Azorean dog from Lisbon, Porto or the Algarve is entirely realistic — the rescue explains exactly how transport works before you commit.
