Municipal kennels in Porto usually ask adopters to be over 18, show ID and either live in the area the kennel serves or accept a follow-up visit. Private associations normally ask for an adoption form and sometimes a home visit. In both cases the animal leaves vaccinated, with its microchip transferred to your name in the national SIAC database and, where age allows, sterilised. Always contact the shelter before travelling — visiting hours are limited and some animals live in foster homes rather than at the shelter.
Everything you need to know about adopting a dog or cat — process, eligibility and what to expect.

Fazer o questionário de compatibilidadeThis page brings together dogs and puppies for adoption from municipal kennels and animal-protection associations across the Porto district. Each listing shows age, size and the shelter responsible, so you can contact the people caring for the dog directly.
The listed dogs are in shelters across: Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia, Matosinhos, Maia, Gondomar, Valongo, Vila do Conde, Póvoa de Varzim, Santo Tirso, Paredes, Penafiel, Trofa.
Most shelters accept adopters from anywhere in the north of Portugal, as long as you can travel to meet the dog.
Municipal kennels (such as the CRO in Vila Nova de Gaia) take in stray animals from their municipality and usually have many adult medium and large dogs waiting for a home.
Associations (CROA, Associação Midas, Streetdogs) rely heavily on foster homes, so they know each dog’s temperament better and tend to have more puppies and litters.
In Portugal every dog must be microchipped and registered in the SIAC database under the keeper’s name. On adoption the shelter hands over the vaccination record and the registration transfer is your responsibility.
Most shelters hand the dog over vaccinated, dewormed and neutered, or ask for a commitment to neuter later when the dog is still a puppy.
After adopting you have 30 days to transfer the microchip registration into your name. SIAC registration is done online (siac.vet), at a vet, at a parish council (junta de freguesia) or at your municipality’s citizen desk. Bring your ID, the vaccination record handed over by the shelter, and the microchip number.
Potentially dangerous breeds additionally require a parish council licence and third-party liability insurance. See our SIAC registration guide.
You can adopt from the CRO kennel in Vila Nova de Gaia, the municipal kennel in Matosinhos, and associations such as CROA, Associação Midas and Streetdogs. Every dog from those shelters appears on this page, with the shelter named on each listing.
Municipal kennels charge no adoption fee. Associations usually ask for a contribution (typically 50–150 EUR) covering vaccines, microchip and neutering. Using this site is always free.

What the municipal kennels and associations in this region normally ask of adopters:
Requirements vary between councils and associations — always confirm with the shelter before visiting.
Greater Porto is covered by a dense network of official municipal collection centres (Centros de Recolha Oficial de Animais), one per council, alongside independent associations. Because each council runs its own centre, the dog or cat closest to you may be listed under a neighbouring town rather than Porto itself.
Adoption costs in the Porto region are among the lowest in Portugal: municipal centres are frequently free or charge a token amount, and associations ask a modest fee. Microchip, vaccination and sterilisation are normally already included. For large or breed-restricted dogs, check whether a special licence applies before you commit.
