Municipal kennels in Lisbon usually ask adopters to be over 18, show ID and either live in the area the kennel serves or accept a follow-up visit. Private associations normally ask for an adoption form and sometimes a home visit. In both cases the animal leaves vaccinated, with its microchip transferred to your name in the national SIAC database and, where age allows, sterilised. Always contact the shelter before travelling — visiting hours are limited and some animals live in foster homes rather than at the shelter.
Everything you need to know about adopting a dog or cat — process, eligibility and what to expect.

Fazer o questionário de compatibilidadeThis page brings together dogs and puppies for adoption from municipal kennels and animal-protection associations across Lisbon, Greater Lisbon and the Setúbal peninsula. Each listing shows age, size and the shelter responsible, so you can contact the people caring for the dog directly.
When you find a dog, contact the shelter named in the listing to confirm availability and arrange a visit. If an original listing is provided, check it and the last refresh date. Ask the shelter about adoption requirements, health care and any fees. Browsing pets and contacting shelters through AdoptPets.pt is free.
The listed dogs are in shelters across: Lisboa, Sintra, Cascais, Oeiras, Amadora, Loures, Almada, Setúbal, Sesimbra, Palmela, Bombarral, Lourinhã.
If you live in Sintra, Cascais or Oeiras you can usually adopt from any shelter in the metropolitan area, as long as you can travel to meet the dog.
Municipal collection centres (such as Casa dos Animais de Lisboa or the Almada municipal kennel) take in strays from their municipality and mostly have adult medium and large dogs.
Associations rely heavily on foster homes, so they know each dog’s temperament better and take in more puppies and litters.
The municipal kennels of Sintra and Cascais mainly take in strays from their own municipality. Adoption usually starts with an in-person visit to the kennel to meet the dog, followed by an adoption form and, in some cases, a short interview to check the dog suits your home.
You don’t have to live in the municipality: people from Lisbon, Oeiras or Amadora can adopt in Sintra or Cascais as long as they can travel to the kennel. Before visiting, confirm opening hours on the council website or by phone.
In Portugal every dog must be microchipped and registered in the SIAC database under the keeper’s name. On adoption the shelter hands over the vaccination record and the registration transfer is your responsibility.
Most shelters hand the dog over vaccinated, dewormed and neutered, or ask for a commitment to neuter later when the dog is still a puppy. The shelter may charge an adoption fee.
