Adopting a dog or cat in Madeira
Madeira is a small, densely populated island in the middle of the Atlantic, and that geography shapes everything about animal rescue here. Dogs abandoned on the levada paths, in the banana terraces above Câmara de Lobos or on the roads around Machico cannot simply move on to the next town — the island is the whole world available to them. Volunteer-run rescues pick these animals up, treat them, and keep them in foster homes and small private kennels until a family appears, on the island or on the mainland.
Because the adopter pool on the island is limited, many Madeiran rescues work closely with adopters in continental Portugal and in German-speaking Europe, where a large part of their volunteer and donor base lives. Listings are often written in German or English as well as Portuguese, and dogs frequently travel with a flight volunteer once an adoption is agreed. If you live in Lisbon, Porto or the Algarve, adopting a Madeiran dog is entirely realistic — the rescue will explain how transport works.
