Place for Strays is dedicated to providing refuge and a second chance at a happy life for abandoned, discarded, and distressed dogs in the Algarve, while actively working to prevent animal suffering through spaying and neutering programs.

The journey of Place for Strays began with immense enthusiasm and dedication, giving rise to a vital refuge for abandoned, discarded, and neglected dogs in the Algarve. This transformative endeavor found its footing on a private property, where it rapidly evolved into a place of protection and renewed hope. Recognizing the scale of such a mission, the "Place for Strays – Streunerhilfe e.V." association was formally established in the summer of 2019. This foundational step solidified the framework for their ongoing work, enabling a cohesive team to channel their efforts effectively. Since then, the organization has grown steadily, driven by the collective spirit of its volunteers and the urgent need to address animal suffering in the region. The initial spark of creating a safe haven has since blossomed into a comprehensive support system, continually expanding its reach and impact.

Place for Strays is primarily rooted in Albufeira, a vibrant municipality within the picturesque Algarve region of Portugal. While their sanctuary is physically located in Albufeira, their impact stretches across the broader Algarve area. Their spaying and neutering programs are specifically targeted around Albufeira, aiming to alleviate animal suffering at its source within the local community. The voluntary team operates both within Portugal, directly managing the sanctuary and local initiatives, and through a support network in Germany, further extending their reach and resources to benefit animals throughout this sun-drenched southern Portuguese region.

At the heart of Place for Strays' mission is the profound commitment to abandoned and mistreated dogs. Their sanctuary in Albufeira serves as a dedicated refuge where these vulnerable canines receive essential care, rehabilitation, and the chance to find loving forever homes. Each dog who arrives is treated with individual attention, aimed at transforming their past hardships into a future filled with health and happiness. Beyond their primary focus on dogs, Place for Strays also extends its compassionate efforts to the feline population in the region. They actively manage and care for several cat colonies, ensuring these community cats receive necessary support. Furthermore, a significant part of their work involves proactive spaying and neutering programs for both dogs and cats around Albufeira. These preventative measures are crucial in reducing the number of homeless animals and mitigating future animal suffering, demonstrating a holistic approach to animal welfare for all creatures under their care.
