Frequently asked questions about adoption in the Algarve

Everything you need to know about adopting a dog or cat — process, eligibility and what to expect.

Adopting a dog or cat in the Algarve

The Algarve is Portugal's southernmost region — sixteen councils stretching from the wild west coast of Aljezur and Vila do Bispo, through the busy central strip around Albufeira and Loulé, to the river border with Spain at Vila Real de Santo António. Behind the beaches and golf resorts lies one of the country's most active animal-rescue communities, built over decades by Portuguese associations and a large international volunteer base. If you are looking to adopt a rescue dog or cat in southern Portugal, the Algarve offers more independent shelters per capita than almost anywhere else in the country.

Because tourism shapes life here, animal welfare in the Algarve has a distinct seasonal rhythm. Holiday rentals, short-term residents and the long summer mean that abandonment spikes in autumn, when visitors leave and unwanted litters arrive. Local shelters absorb this pressure year-round, which is exactly why adoption matters so much in the south: every home found frees a kennel or a foster place for the next animal pulled off the street.

A rescue scene built for international adopters

The Algarve is unusual in Portugal for how comfortable its shelters are with cross-border adoption. With large British, German, Dutch and Irish communities living locally and visiting regularly, organisations such as Animal Rescue Algarve, Cadela Carlota and the Carvoeiro Cat Charity have years of experience arranging pet passports, rabies titre testing, transport flights and overseas home checks. If you live in northern Europe and want to give an Algarve rescue a home, the infrastructure to do it safely and legally already exists.

That same network also means a wider variety of animals than you might expect: ex-hunting dogs and podengos handed in after the season, abandoned guard dogs from rural quintas, colony cats from coastal towns, and the occasional pedigree surrendered by departing residents. Many shelters operate a foster model, so the animal you meet is already living in a home — and the foster carer can tell you exactly how it behaves with children, cats, stairs and car journeys.

What to consider before you adopt in the south

The Algarve climate is a genuine factor in matching the right animal to your home. Summer temperatures regularly pass 35°C inland around Loulé and Silves, so flat-faced breeds, very thick-coated dogs and seniors need shade, indoor cooling and walks limited to early mornings and evenings. Cats adapt well, but outdoor access near busy coastal roads carries real risk. Shelter staff know their region and will steer you towards an animal whose needs fit your house, garden and daily routine.

Adoption fees in the Algarve typically range from €50 to €180 and almost always cover microchipping, vaccinations, deworming and sterilisation — exceptional value compared with buying. By law every animal must be microchipped and registered in SIAC before going home. If you are renting one of the region's many holiday or long-let properties, confirm your landlord allows pets in writing before you apply; it is the single most common reason an otherwise perfect adoption falls through.

How adoption works, step by step

    1. 1

      Browse Algarve listings

Filter by town, species, age or breed to find dogs and cats currently in Algarve shelters and foster homes.

    2. 2

      Contact the shelter directly

Each profile links straight to the rescue. Ask about temperament, health and whether the animal is in kennels or fostered.

    3. 3

      Meet your match

Arrange a visit or a walk. Foster-based rescues can often bring the animal to meet your family in a relaxed setting.

    4. 4

      Home check

Algarve shelters carry out a home check — in person locally, or by video for adopters living abroad.

    5. 5

      Paperwork & passport

Sign the adoption contract and confirm microchip, SIAC registration and — for travel — an EU pet passport.

    6. 6

      Take them home

Collect locally or coordinate a transport flight. Reputable rescues stay in touch long after the adoption.
